The Birth & Growth of a School 1971 - 1991:
Resource Program
How did we create a Resource program? The most basic answer is that the needs of
the children created it. From help previously being offered outside the classroom -
tutoring, special painting and eurythmy - a more coordinated effort was initiated by
Helen Crombie and others to insure educational assistance to students. Grant money
was obtained in 1986 to study the needs of the student body, hire special education
and curative work experts and gather Resource program information. Mary Jo Oresti,
from the Detroit Waldorf School, acted as our mentor in the process. After two
years of study and with a second grant to equip a room and purchase supplies, we were ready to begin.
With many groans, the birth of the Resource program occurred in September, 1989. A third grant
now helps provide a pool for scholarship aid. Although this program is carried in part by general
tuition, the parents who use the services must pay for them.
The Care Group, consisting of eight faculty members who meet regularly to discuss students of
concern, determines with class teachers appropriate therapy or tutoring. At this time, the
Resource program, headed by Barbara Witschonke, includes special eurythmy, painting,
modeling, form drawing, speech, movement and assistance in all academic areas.
